Project Description
This project included a full Cadastral Retracement Survey for a proposed 345kV transmission line corridor. The new transmission line starts in Brookings, SD and runs north to Big Stone, SD encompassing approximately 75 linear miles. The line crosses into three counties, Brookings, Grant, and Deuel. We started the project by ordering all of the original government survey notes and plats from the SD State Archives office and by conducting research at each of the three counties Register of Deeds offices. We obtained copies of all Certified Land Corner Records, Subdivision Plats and Boundary Surveys along the proposed route. We began the initial field survey by excavating with a tracked mini-excavator for original stone monuments set by the Government Land Office in the late 1800’s at the township corners. We then completed the search for all section and quarter sections corners along and adjacent to the route using computed locations from the record documents. After all computations were complete we re-monumented the missing corners with a rebar and surveyors cap. We also corner ties and drafted Certified Land Corner Records for all monuments that we set as well as all monuments that we accepted that did not have existing Corner Records. We recovered and/or re-established approximately 350 Public Land Survey System Corners.
